Survivorship is a critical, but often overlooked part of the cancer journey. It is the focus on the health, well-being, and overall quality of life from the time of diagnosis throughout the rest of your life. It includes exercise and movement, nutrition, mental health, and complimentary therapies including acupuncture, meditation, Reiki and more. You can focus on survivorship on Day 1 or Day 700. GMBCC is dedicated to supporting survivors and prioritizing your quality of life throughout your journey.

Survivorship Care Q&A

What can I expect from survivorship care appointments?

During a survivorship care appointment, Dr. Waterman reviews your medical history and asks about any new symptoms or changes since your last visit. Depending on your treatment history and individual risk factors, your appointment may include a breast and chest wall examination and recommendations for mammograms or other breast imaging.

You may also discuss treatment-related concerns, such as changes in breast appearance, discomfort, lymphedema, fatigue, or changes affecting your quality of life. Survivorship visits are also an opportunity to optimize lifestyle, medications, and other preventive healthcare needs.

What breast health changes should I report during survivorship care?

It’s important to tell Dr. Waterman about new or unusual breast changes, even between scheduled appointments. Contact her if you notice:

  • A new lump or thickening
  • Changes in breast size or shape
  • Skin changes
  • Redness
  • Nipple changes
  • Unusual nipple discharge
  • New or lingering pain
  • Swelling in your arm or breast
  • Changes around a surgical scar

While many of these symptoms have causes other than cancer recurrence, prompt evaluation can provide the answers and treatment you need.

How does survivorship care help protect long-term health?

Regular follow-ups can identify concerning changes early, address lasting treatment effects, and ensure you receive recommended breast imaging and preventive care.

Dr. Waterman can also help you understand factors that support long-term health, including physical activity, nutrition, maintaining a healthy weight, managing other medical conditions, and avoiding tobacco.

With personalized follow-up and open communication, breast cancer survivorship care at Green Mountain Breast Care Center aims to provide the support you deserve so you can feel confident about your health beyond treatment.
