Breast cancer develops when abnormal cells in the lobules or ducts of the breast rapidly divide and expand without restriction. These cells can form a tumor and, in some cases, spread to nearby lymph nodes or other areas of the body.
There are several subtypes of breast cancer, and each behaves differently. Your treatment plan depends on factors such as the type and stage of cancer, the tumor’s characteristics, your overall health, and your personal preferences.
Dr. Waterman helps you understand your diagnosis and works with you to determine the appropriate next steps in your care.
Breast cancer is primarily diagnosed by biopsy which is performed after either abnormal imaging or after you or your health care provider notices a change in your breast. Possible signs include:
If an imaging test, such as a mammogram or breast ultrasound, identifies a suspicious area, breast biopsy is often recommended. A breast biopsy removes a small sample of tissue so it can be examined for cancer cells and provide information that helps guide treatment.
Breast cancer treatment is highly individualized. Depending on your diagnosis, your care may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, targeted therapy, or a combination of treatments.
As a breast surgeon, Dr. Waterman focuses on the surgical aspects of breast cancer care while working with other members of your treatment team to coordinate your overall plan.
Surgical treatment depends on the size, location, and characteristics of the cancer as well as your individual needs and goals. Options may include breast-conserving surgery, also called lumpectomy, which removes the cancer while preserving as much healthy breast tissue as possible.
For some patients, mastectomy may be recommended to remove the entire breast. Dr. Waterman may also evaluate or remove nearby lymph nodes to determine whether cancer has spread.
Dr. Waterman discusses your surgical options with you, answers your questions, and helps you understand what to expect before and after your procedure.
